Outlook -- docx attachments convert to windat files

[MaryFriend]

When I send word documents (docx) as attachments from Outlook, they are being
converted to windat files so the recipients can't open them. They are not
rtf files.

Does it happen if you use plain text message format?
What version of Outlook?
what type of email account?
