Outlook does not refresh imap inbox when message is deleted on ser

I have Outlook set up to use imap on two computers as well as my Palm. The
problem is that messages deleted from the server will not dissappear in
Outlook as long as Outlook is running. If if restart Outlook the imap inbox
is updated correctly. I thougt Microsoft had solved this problem between
Outlook 2000 and 2003, but obviously not. Is there a solution?

You will need to manually purge the items using Edit->Purge. (I think it is
on the Edit menu - I despise IMAP so I don't have a current setup to check.)

the (insert latest virus name here) virus, all mail sent to my personal
account will be deleted without reading.

I'm sorry but I think you misunderstood the problem. Messages deleted from
the server (via my Palm or via webmail) will not disappear in Outlook after
Send/Receive as long as it is running. The only way to really sync with the
server is to shut down Outlook and then restart.

It looks like a quite serious bug to me, for those that use imap.

It is how IMAP works - not a bug.

If Outlook gets out of sync with the server, that is surely not a feature of
the imap protocol. It it either a bug in Outlook and/or the mail server.

After playing around, posting messages from Outlook, from the webmail
interface, deleting messages from both clients, the result is that Outlook
has no clue what messages are still available on the server. Unless I restart
Outlook, and wham-bam it is back in sync.

Outlook 2003 is worse than that. We regularly have entire
folders lose their contents in Outlook when the messages
are clearly still on the server and visible in Outlook 2002
, Outlook Express 6, and othter IMAP clients. The
synchronization of folder contents between Outlook and the
server is serious broken in 2003. And this is surprising
considering how well 2002 and Outlook Express 6 both work.

One would have to assume the imap bugs to be a conscious decision, so that
customers would buy the Exchange Server application.
