They do it for the sake of security. It is a default setting in OE. Go to
Tools>Options>Security Tab>unclick the selection that says "Don't allow
attachments to be opened that may be..........". BE ADVISED: it's up to
you to make sure any attachments you open are not viruses or whatever if you
do this.
