Outlook Error / Closing while checking mail

I am running outlook from MS office 2000 on new Dell 8300
with windows xp. When I open outlook and click
send/receive button it starts to access mail server and
then error message appears and program closes. any ideas
or suggestions?

I checked the knowledge base, saw the article about

McAfee firewall but that is not enabled on this machine
only the virus scan is on.
