outlook express messages disappear

inbox messages disappear when I open a message that contains a word document.
I open the document and then all my messages in Outlook disapperas with no
trace to find it. I click send/recieve and I get 2 or more new messages. I
open a word document and those messages in Outlook disappear It does not go
to the trash nor other folders. I am running 98 with Outlook express. I need
to know why this happens when I open a word document?

Check your View settings. Make sure Show all messages is selected, not just
Unread ones.
