Can these apps be used at the same time. I had a problem
designating EMail to one app or the other and the "Send
To" menu choice was grayed out in virtually all of my
apps.

Only ONE can be default mail client. You can USE both, and in fact Outlook
2002 uses OE as its news reader, but you can only have one OR the other as
the default mail client.
