Outlook Express slows to crawl after security update to XP

I ran a windows update (XP) for the "most critical"
security patches, excluding SP2, and now Outlook Express
takes several minutes to load, when it used to take
several seconds. Can anyone provide a diagnosis and
(hopefully) a cure? This happened immediately after the
update, so I don't think there is a separate cause.
