Outlook Express update - lost old mail folders

I recently downloaded and installed the available Win98
updates. Afterwards, Outlook Express takes forever to open
and then I can not see my old mail folders. I can confirm
their existence with Windows Explorer and
the "Tools/Options/Maintenance" dialog box shows the
correct (default) path. How do I get this list to appear
again so I can retrieve these older messages?
