Outlook Express

Please, someone help me, please.
When I open my email.......lets say I read the first one and then delete it,
the next one automatically opens up.............and, I don't want it to.
Additionally, when I first view all of my received mail, I would like to
delete some WITHOUT them opening.........however, just can't seem to do so.
I've tried right clicking to no avail.................the email still opens
up. How does one prevent themselves from opening up an email that they don't
want to view?
