First try clicking Start>All Programs>Microsoft Office>Microsoft Office
Tools>Inbox Repair Tool or Start>All Programs>Microsoft Office Tools>Inbox
Repair Tool. If neither are there, open Windows Explorer and, in the Address
field, enter

%CommonProgramFiles%\system\MSMAPI\1033

for English language Outlook 2003 or earlier (the "1033" will be different for
languages other than English) or

"%ProgramFiles%\Microsoft Office\Office12"

for Outlook 2007. Click Go. SCANPST.EXE (aka the Inbox Repair Tool) will be
there.

Thanks for your help.

The "Inbox Repair Tool" was not there.

I also don't appear to have Windows Explorer

When I left click the start button I can open explorer and find my way down
to

C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\System\MSMAPI\1033 but the only file in
there is a DLL file - MSMAPI32.dll

BTW I'm running vista and outlook 2007.

Other thoughts?

If you can open Explore, then you have Windows Explorer. Was there a file
called scanpst.exe?

Have you enabled viewing hidden files and folders?

In Windows Explorer, click on Tools > Folder Options. Click on the View tab
and click on the buttons Show Hidden Files and Folders and also uncheck the
box Hide file extensions for known file types. Then search again.

Sure you do. Open "Computer". That's Windows Explorer.

Please read what I said again:

Look in the same folder where the OUTLOOK.EXE image resides.
