Outlook fails if check mail every xx is on

I know before I start that this issue makes no sense.

I have Outlook 2002 on a machine. The machine has XP SP2. I have all the
current patches on both XP and Outlook.

I set up mail and used if flawlessly for several days. Yesterday I turned on
"check mail every 5 minutes."

When I got in last evening, Outlook had failed. It would not honor the F9 or
send/receive. Errors were returned indicating time out on the server.

I checked IE and I could access the internet fine.

I started Outlook Express and it could receive mail fine.

I could send mail from Outlook 2002.

I could test connection in Outlook 2002.

After doing various things with no success(reboot of dsl modem, reboot of
router, reboot of machine, remove and reinstall mail accounts on Outlook
2002) I remembered the change to auto check mail. I unchecked this option and
restarted Outlook. All appears to be working now sans auto check of mail.

I am puzzled. I do not see how this feature could cause what I see
happening. Any Ideas?

Diane;

Thanks for replying. I will try to set it to 10 minutes this weekend and test.

Outlook works fine using manual retrieve with check mail frequency turned
off. The machine is on a DSL connection and is alway on.

I can understand why a low cycle time (5 minutes) might give issues if the
ISP will not handle that. I do not understand how having the time set and
then doing manual retrieve should fail. I would really like to understand
what is going on.

Thanks again

Robert
