Outlook file types, finding where files are

D

Dave Smith

Hi all,

I am in a quandry. I have been asked to help someone out at home. The
following is a little vague but I came in after the fact.

Father has son set up router so both can share email. (this works fine but I
don't know what they did)
Son removes router (and leaves to go back to Ottawa where he was accessing
the email from, we are in Belleville)
Opening outlook (ver 2000) shows no messages now.
Before son leaves he shows the father a folder where he can see the inbox
list (does not open any messages)
Problem is son cannot get messages back into Outlook.
Son leaves.
Father calls me
I cannot find this folder (father did not write down path and son seems
unavailable for the time being), this is my first problem
If I do find this folder not sure how to get the messages back into outlook

So my questions are:

Does anyone know if there is a standard place for shared emal messages to
go.

How can I find these messages otherwise (can I search by file type)?

If we are now using Outlook and the current Inbox, Sent, etc is being
modified, how can we copy the messages from this currently unkown location
back in?

For those more experienced with how Outlook files work, please add any other
comments or point me in a better direction.

Thanks

Dave

Information about the files and locations that outlook uses is here:
http://www.slipstick.com/config/backup.htm

You'll want to search all hidden files and folders (an advanced option in
windows xp) for *.pst

Outlook doesn't support shared psts so it's hard to say what they were
doing.

http://www.slipstick.com/config/backup.htm will give you a breakdown of the
different file extensions, what each file contains, and where they are
created by default.

As for the bulk of the question, the key file(s) you want to focus on
finding are the *.PST files. This contains mail, contacts, calendar, tasks,
..etc. You can use File | Import and Export to import export data from other
PST files or you can easily select File | Open | Personal Folders (or
Outlook Data File) to open it and then just copy items between Personal
Folder files. When complete, just right click on Personal Folders and
select Close (or disconnect).
