Outlook folders

This is an odd question, but keep in mind I'm blind, so this is just what the screen reader is returning.
When arrowing down the folder list, it gives a number to the right of the folder. Sometimes, this number is the total number of messages in that folder, and sometimes it is the number of unread messages in that folder.
What dictates which is displayed on any given folder?
If all the messages are read, then there is sometimes no message at all!
I'm trying to determine a means of getting to those numbers, but would really like to find out what dictates the category used--unread, total, or nothing.

Hi Dennis. First off, this group is for programming topics. In the future,
try microsoft.public.outlook for general inquiries.

You can change these settings by right-clicking the folder and selecting
Properties. Then choose either Show number of unread items or Show total
number of items.
