outlook gives error when sending mail from home..works elsewhere

On my laptop, which I carry to/from work, I can receive messages anywhere I
am connected fine but when I am at home I can only receive messages, I get an
error message that outlook cannot connect to my outgoing server. I don't
change anything so why does it receive okay but not send? Thanks in advance
