outlook hangs when I start doing a lot of work in contacts

When I am working in my contact folder. Outlook will hang and go non
responsive with an "Not REsonding" message in the header. After a while
though it will break loose and work for a little longer.

Any suggestions.

6500 contacts if anyone thinks this is a problem.
