Outlook Hangs

I have a user that has not deleted and e-mail for 2 years. Consequently his file is now 575MB. Now when I start outlook it hangs. I ran scanpst.exe and found no problems. I also renamed outcmd.dat to outcmd.old and still the same. I cannot even download any mail, but outlook express works fine. I tried to delete some files but hangs on that to. help. This system is win2kpro sp4 office XP professional 1ghz proc and 256MB ram
