Outlook identity crisis

Ian Roberts

Whatever account I select when composing and sending mail, the copy
of the mail that is saved in my Sent Items folder shows it
having been sent from the Default Account, although the mail recipient
sees it as having come from the one I selected.

Why is this?

- I'm using OL2002sp3 on XP Pro
- I'm using Outlook in IMO mode
- I have several pop3/smtp accounts set up

Can anyone out there help me please?
I'm tearing my hair out and down on my knees...

Thanks in advance,

Ian

Why is this a problem? As long as the recipient sees the message as coming
from the correct address, what difference does it make?

It's misleading, that's why, and downright wrong. I use several email
accounts for different lines of business, and my business often
involves representing others. It's a bit awkward when showing my
clients copies of emails I have sent on their behalf, when they appear
to be from the wrong address and suggesting a completely different
line of business. No amount of explaining "oh it's just a bug in
Outlook" will remove the obvious element of doubt that creeps in, in
such circumstances.

You said in your post:

"although the mail recipient sees it as having come from the one I
selected." To me this means that, since you said you select the correct
sending address, and the recipient sees the mail as coming from the correct
address, you shouldn't have a problem. Now you're contradicting yourself.
It can't be both ways.

Please keep up Brian. The recipient sees the sender's email address as
correct. My Sent Items shows it as incorrect. Seeing as I send emails
on behalf of others, who don't have email, it is important that the
copies they see in my Sent Items (when reviewing what I write on their
behalf) are accurately addressed.

Can anyone here actually offer a solution to this rather than trying
to tell me I don't have a problem?

Thanks in advance,

Ian

Whatever account I select when composing and sending mail, the copy
of the mail that is saved in my Sent Items folder shows it
having been sent from the Default Account, although the mail recipient
sees it as having come from the one I selected.

Here's some more info on my configuration to help others replicate the
problem, if they are inclined to do so:

1) I have several sub-folders under "Sent Items" to represent the
various email accounts I use, and have rules set up to move a copy of
outgoing mails into those sub-folders according to the account via
which the emails are sent.

2) I have "Save copies of messages in Sent Items folder" turned off in
Options, so I don't get replica messages saved in the "Sent Items"
root folder as well as its sub-folders.

If I turn off the rules and let mails drop into the "Sent Items" root
folder then they appear to from the correct sender, i.e. the problem
goes away. It seems to be the rule to move a copy to a sub-folder that
confuses Outlook. So my gut feeling is that this is a bug. Some
feedback would be appreciated from a MVP on whether this has been
logged with Microsoft.

As a workaround I have now deleted the subfolders and created a new
view in Sent Items that groups messages by Email Account. This works
fine, so I will stick with it for now.

No where in any of your postings did you mention you were sending messages
on others' behalf. How can I "keep up" with something you don't state?
