Assuming you have installed the latest win search tool, it takes time to
build the index, or it maybe that the index requires a rebuild. In Control
panel, Indexing Options applet, rebuild the index

Hi,

I also have this problem - since installing IE8.
When I access the Indexing options applet the tcik boxes are greyed out and
the message I get is "Search is not working".

I have tried several fixes including downloading a Trial Version of Office
2007.
I have also deleted Windows Search 4.0 and attempted to Re-install - it does
not work.

Is there anything else I can try. I need expert Help - please.

FIXED!

I've been dealing with this indexing issue in Outlook search for months.
Did a re-install of Office, re-install of Vista, repair of Office, and even
ran the ScanPST.exe file. Everything fixes the search from that point
BACKWARD, but going forward, new stuff doesn't get indexed.

So I learned I have support on Office. Talked to India, and actually found
the resolution. From the TOOLS menu, choose INSTANT SEARCH > SEARCH OPTIONS.
Under "Indexing" UN-Check "Personal Folders" and "Archive Folders". Exit
Outlook and re-start Outlook. Screen-shot here:

It seems to me that this sets it back to the way search used to be before
07... it will search slower, but at least the results are accurate. If it
doesn't return results right away, just give it a minute, and it will speed
up after a few searches.

I hope it works for you too.

Thanks jmmcolo,

Unfortunately your fix does not work for me. The "Personal Folders" box is
unchecked on my applet and when I do check it the software refuses to accept
the change and I get another error message.

Sometime yesterday I did get the Search function to work in Slow mode and
somewhat stupidly decided to re-install version 4.0 again. This stopped
Search from working at all.

Anyway tnx for your offer of help - ta.

I do not understand why people spend months in trying to fix computer
problems. Maybe I am a little bit lazy, but I also think that
Microsoft has to help his customers immediately after they have sent a
question. Concerning this case, I am using lookeen a search tool which
is very fast and reliable and which is also very important, a question
is answered after 1-2 days, thanks to the quick support center.

Hi Jason,

I spent about 7 days trying to fix my problem and came across the Microsoft
Outlook support facility. I contacted them and within 24 hours had them
looking into my computer.

At this time they have not been able to fix my problem which appears to
require a code fix. It appears that there is a basic error that crops up on
some PCs.

You mistake the purpose of this group. While it is hosted on Microsoft
servers, it is not staffed nor monitored by Microsoft. It is a peer-to-peer
support group where people who are so inclined offer their expertise to
assist people who post here asking questions about Microsoft software
problems, Office in particular in this news group.
