Hi there
I've set things up on SBS 2003 with Exchange 2003 so that our users (almost
all of whom are mobile) can send/receive mails in several ways:
(i) using the local WLAN (when in the office and in range),
(ii) using RPC/HTTP (when offsite but when an internet connection is
available),
(iii) using Outlook Web Access (when working from a kiosk, either directly
or over a VPN connection).
All of the above work well and seamlessly except RPC/HTTP, which works
intermittently.
Specifically, in the bottom right corner of the Outlook status bar I get the
message "This folder was last updated at 07.19AM. Trying to connect ...",
and this message can appear for several hours at a stretch without a
successful connection being made. There's no problem with connectivity to
the server, since I can connect using the WLAN (e.g. disabling my dial-up
connection etc) and Outlook Web Access (e.g. disabling the wireless adapter
on my laptop etc). I try to force Outlook to make a connection to the server
by following the <File><Connect to Microsoft Exchange Server> menus, but no
luck. In fact, sometimes this menu item is not available and instead says
"Work offline", even while the status bar reads "Trying to connect...".
I've tried to experiment with two things: (a) server connection timeout
settings (default = 30 seconds, which I've set to 300 seconds without
success); and (b) send/receive dialup connection settings (default = use
existing connection (LAN), which I've changed to the other options without
success).
