Outlook keeps trying to install - help!

I have the Office home & student edition (which doesn't have Outlook). I am
happy using Windows mail but every web mailto link I hit - Outlook tries to
install and tells me that my product key is incorrect.

I can do one of two things -
1. upgrade to Outlook (how and how much $$) , or
2. somehow get Outlook to recognize Windows mail as default and stop it from
trying to install.

Suggestions?

My guess is that you have a trial version of Office on your computer that
does include Outlook. Your product key is for a version that doesn't so the
system tells you it's wrong.

It's not Outlook that you want to recognize Windows Mail, it's Windows in
general. A quick search yeilded the following site:
