Hello:

I have just deployed a Windows 2003 server. I installed Outlook 2003 on the
server. About half of the time when a user logs in and opens Outlook 2003
nothing happens. If I look in Task Manager I can see "outlook.exe" running.
If I end task on it and restart I get a message asking if I want to open it
in safe mode.

Does anyone have any idea what might be going on?

Dear Harrison,

Thank you for posting here.

Before we go further, in order to get a more concrete idea as to what the
exact problem is and how to resolve it efficiently, please let me know the
following information.

1. Does the issue happen to all the users or only certain user in this
Windows Server 2003 Terminal Server?

2. Does the issue persist if user logon locally?

And based on my knowledge, please try the following steps.

Step 1: Windows Selective Startup

1. Click Start, click Run, type "msconfig" (without the quotation marks) in
the Open box, and then click OK.
2. On the General tab, click Selective Startup, and then clear "Load
Startup Items".
3. On the Services tab, click to check "Hide All Microsoft Services".
4. Clear all the remaining non-Microsoft services in the list.
5. Click OK, and then click Restart to restart your computer.
6. After Windows starts, please check whether this issue disappears and
please let me know.

If the issue persists, please continue with the following step.

Step 2: Outlook Profile

Note: A new profile is a new environment for us to use Outlook. To create a
new profile is only for a test to see if the problem is related to the
corrupt profile of Outlook. Creating new profile will not do any damage to
the old profile.

You can refer to the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base (KB)
for more information:

829918 How to create a new e-mail profile in Outlook 2003
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=829918

If the issue persists, please continue with next step.

Step 3: Clear all Add-Ins in Outlook.

1. Start Outlook.
2. On the Tools menu, click Options, and then click the Other tab.
3. Click Advanced Options, and then click Add-In Manager and COM Add-Ins
respectively.
4. In both Add-in boxes, click to clear the check boxes for the add-ins.
5. Click OK three times.

Please let me know the results so that I can provide further assistance on
this problem. I am looking forward to your reply. Thanks and have a nice
day!

Thanks & Regards,

Lee Li
