If the outbox is open, and the headline of one of the messages happens to be
selected, the application will mark that message as read after a while (the
style changes from bold italic to bold normal) and it won't be sent during
Send & Receive.

Make sure the Preview/Reading Pane is off for the Outbox or it won't Send
until the Send button in the message itself is pressed again. Outlook thinks
it's open and being edited.

It is off -- both in the inbox and outbox.
