Outlook "Microsoft LDAP Directory" Error

When sending an email to a person within the domain (we run Exchange 2003)
some users report a popup warning appears. It states

No such object. Possibly your specified Search Base is invalid.

After clicking on the OK button, the warning goes away and the email is
successfully sent. If I recall correctly, many were upgrades from OL2002.

Found that closing OUtlook, deleting the user's .nk2 file, then reopening
outlook works, but removes the history of people that they have conversed
with previously.
