Outlook not auto populating email address

B

Bea

We are running Outlook 2000 and I recently had to redo my
profile. Previously, I was able to simply type a unique
portion of a name (ie. "Sus" for Susan) and Outlook would
automatically populate the rest of the email address based
on that unique portion of the name. It would pull this
from my address book. Since I redid my profile on my PC,
I can no longer get this function to work. Is there
something I must choose in a tools menu somewhere to
activate this "auto-population" of the address? I really
miss this functionality!!

Go to Tools -> Options -> Email Options -> Advance Email
Options - And at the bottom, make sure there is a
checkmark in the following:

"Suggest Names While Completeing, To,CC,BCC" Etc etc. and
"Automatic Name Checking".

This should resolve your issue. If it does not, I would
venture to say that you have NO previously "learned"
email addresses for outlook to complete. Meaning, if you
redid your profile (started fresh/deleted) there are no
email addresses.

Good Luck

Bea,

Nothing really is as it sometimes seems. The autocomplete function of
Outlook is not obtaining the address information from your contact folder.
It is pulling it from a file known as an NK2 file.

Hopefully that file and all of it's contents are still on your computer.

The only issue is that it may not have the correct name or it is not in the
location that OL is looking for it in.

Here's where you can look for it manually:

Docs and Settings\Your login user name\applications\Microsoft\Outlook.

When you go to that directory, there should now be at least one file with an
extension of NK2.

If you wish to search for this file, start your search dialogue, and select
Advanced Search options to search for Hidden and System files. Next, you
should look in your Documents and Settings folder and search for *.nk2.

Another clever way to find that files is by typing:

%userprofile%\application data\Microsoft\Outlook in your Windows Explorer
address line.

If you find it, tell me the file name and size. You can write me directly
at

rmcnees(removethis)@dcs-imaging.com and I might be able to walk you through
a re-connecting process that will restore your autocomplete data. Chances
are it is still out there, loaded with all of your data, changing profiles
can/will cause your system to lose track of this file.

Good luck,

Randy

Bea,
None of the previous responders is correct. They are both referring to an
autocomplete feature which Outlook 2000 does not have.
What you are missing is the autoresolution (Automatic Name Checking)
feature. To get it back you simply need to re-establish the connection
between your Contacts Folder and the Outlook Address Book in your new
profile:
Go to Tools > Services. Make sure the Outlook Address Book service is
listed. If not, add it. Next, R click on the Contact folder or folders you
want the OAB to display, choose "Properties", go to the Outlook Address Book
tab and check the "Show this folder as an E-mail address book" box. You may
also need to go to Tools > Options > Addressing Tab and choose to show your
Contacts folder.
