Outlook not downloading email due to malformed messages.

Outlook 2000 is not downloading email due to malformed emails, happening
quite often. Service pack three is installed. Is there anything more I can
do to this version of Outlook so that I can receive mail other then clearing
the bad message from the server or will I have to upgrade to 2003?

Malformed in what way? What error message do you get? Does it work when you
download them when Outlook is started in safe mode?

Thanks for the response.

It has been discribed to me as "improperly formatted message-ID headers"
that Outlook cannot download. I have not tried to download messages while
Outlook is in safe mode yet. Will get back to you on that.

The message I receive is:
1 message(s) could'nt be retrieved from the server. This usually happens
when the connection to the server is lost due to server or network problems.
If the problem persists, contact your administrator.

The TCP/IP connection was unexpectedly terminated by the server.
(Account:'mail.mymailserver.com', POP3 Server: '00.000.000.000', Error
Number: 0x800ccc0f).

What does the message and message header looks like when you look at it from
your webbased client?

If you have Norton anti-virus, see
http://service1.symantec.com/support/sharedtech.nsf/docid/2002071214223706
- problems with Norton have been causing this a lot.

If that's not the problem, you might try disabling email scanning by any
other anti-virus or anti-spam software you might have installed - they are
often behind problems like this.

The message actually looks normal when viewed from the web based client.
Here is an example of a header from one of these emails:

Subject: What Would Happen To Your Family If You Died?

Thanks for the help.

I have Norton Anti-Virus 2004 and when I turn off incoming email scanning the
bad email does come in. Is there anything else that can be done? I really do
not want to recomend to a client to turn scanning off.

Thanks for the help.

And why not? Scanning of email is usually unnecessary. If they have an
on-access or real-time scanner as a component of their antivirus package,
that scanner will detect any malware if they were to open an infected
message. Scanning email as it comes in (and especially as it goes out) is
fraught with problems for the mail server connection.

As Brian says, on-access scanning will catch any viruses. While scanning
on a corporate mail server is usually a good idea (to prevent a virus from
getting to an unprotected machine, say), scanning on the client doesn't
actually provide any extra protection if an on-access scanner is in place -
it's just a warm fuzzy. And it often causes problems for mail clients...
