Outlook on Two computers status of an email message

One of my users has two laptop computers. He is running Outlook 2003 and XP
Pro on both of them. I have cache mode enabled on both of them. He has one
laptop at home and the other in his office. His problem is this: When he
marks an email message as read on his home laptop, the same message on his
work laptop is still marked as unread when we gets into the office. The same
happens if he marks the message as read on his office laptop.

Does anyone have some insigth into why this is? And how to get both laptops
to mark a message as read when he reads an email from either one?

Leaving out the second computer for now - when he works offline against his
Exchange mailbox, and marks a message as read, what happens when he goes
back to the office, connects, and syncs? Does the message show up as read?
Does all other synchronization seem to work properly?

Also, what other mail services does he have in this profile besides
Exchange, if any? How is he connecting to the Exchange server from home?
