As anyone heard when Outlook for OSX will be released.
It was going to be 'summer' but still no sign.

Hi,

Sorry I am a bit confused. Does this post mean that the OSX Version
of Outlook is no longer coming at all but has been replaced by an
Exchange capable Entourage? I have Entourage and have the Exchange
update. I have just started using it but it seems to have a lot less
functionality than does Outlook for many of the things I wish to do.
Frankly, unless Im missing something it just isnt of much use to me in
fact.

Thanks.
Bill

Hi Bill!

An OS X version of Outlook was never planned or announced that I'm aware of.
Microsoft announced back in February that Entourage would be the new
Exchange client for Mac OS X. The release of the Entourage 10.1.4 update is
the official transition.

I can understand your confusion about the functionality. It does severely
lack some of Outlook's capabilities such as server-side rules and proxying
other users. To me, these items alone make it not ready for prime-time use
in an enterprise environment.

It does add some new functionality that Mac Outlook users never had, such as
a newsreader and Palm sync.

I believe, however, that the Mac Business Unit's methods are actually
reasonable. Unlike many Windows products, the MacBU is following Internet
standards, such as using IMAP instead of the Microsoft proprietary MAPI.
Maybe the Mac side is acting a guinnea pigs for something larger for
Exchange clients altogether.

Functionality will return, but this is probably a classic example of having
to take one step back to take two steps forward.

If you need more detailed information about setting us Entourage with
Exchange to use its full potential, see this article on Microsoft's website
http://www.microsoft.com/mac/support.aspx?pid=exchange.

Hope this helps!

Thanks Bill. Not exactly what I was hoping for but it is good to know
what the situation is. The problems I had with Entourage arent
actually the ones you mentioned but rather that it seems to not work
offline in a very efficient manner. I travel a lot and need a client
that will let me do a lot of work offline, then when I can connect
sync everything. Outlook and Exchange do that wonderfully on the PC
side of things. It seems that I just cant do that with a Mac.
Entourage doesnt seem to do it and Outlook doesnt seem to work through
the VPN so it looks like Im pretty much in a corner with no where to
go. Only options are to not use the notebook for email while
traveling (which is doable but seems a bit silly) or to lose the
notebook altogether. What I really cant understand is why Apple
decided to take away the ability to boot in OS9. That would have
solved all of my problems after a fashion.
