Sometime when I start Outlook nothing happens. Checking the windows task
manager show that multiple instances of Outlook are in memory. Selecting end
task for one or more of them seems to allow Outlook to start, but with error
messages. Is there any way to fix this?

Some common reasons why Outlook will not shut down completely when you click either the X or Exit:

1. PDA synchronization software with your PDA in the cradle.
2. WinFax Pro (especially 10.02 in Outlook 2003) - contact their support for an alleged fix.
3. Franklin-Covey Plan Plus!
4. COM Add-ins.
5. Mail reminder add-ins that keep a stub of Outlook open in the background to check for new mail and fire reminders.
6. Anti-virus/firewall programs that are set to scan incoming and outgoing mail.
7. Skype - check for a later version

I don't have any of those programs .. with the exception of anti-virus. I
use Windows One Care for that.

This is disconcerting. I'm only using Outlook (2003) to synch with PDA and
SmartPhone. And we can't very well disable Antivirus programs. These are the
only items from your list that are applicable here.

It's causing havoc at home where we have more than one mail profile. As
such, it's supposed to prompt for the user profile whenever Outlook is run.
Sometimes it does.... sometimes it doesn't ask and just goes straight to
(often to the wrong one) profile. Also leaving potential for more problems
when inadvertently running someone elses email.

Research around here indicates this has been a problem for quite a long
while. Does this mean Microsoft is unable to fix?

No one suggested you disable your AV program. What was siggested is not to
waste time scanning mail. Disable the mail integration feature of the AV
program, but leave the rest enabled. You are no less protected.

That's because Outlook didn't really close and that profile is still open.

Of course you can disable / remove your AV plugin to OL, assuming your AV
has real time scanning / monitoring you are still protected.
Sometimes it is neccessary to uninstall your AV app completely, before
reinstalling without the OL intergration.
