Outlook Property Definitions

What exactly does it mean "Properties for this
information service needs to be defined...."? I ask as I
accidentaly deleted my .pst file (105mb of mesgs). I used
a data recovery tool to find it..(the tool noted the file
as in "good" condition). After doing the "scanpst" bit I
could open some of the messages and then kept on getting
the "properties needs to be defined blah blah use scanpst
etc" message PLUS a new one that says that Outlook cannot
save the layout (or something to that effect?)

What can one do?

A couple of things to try. 1) close Outlook and delete outcmd.dat. Restart
Outlook. 2) Create a new mail profile. 3) Remove the Personal Folders
service and readd it, making sure you point at your repaired PST.

Hi Brian,

Many thanks for taking the time to reply to my problem...I
don't know what we newbies would do without people like
yourself...

To my problem..

1) I am a bit lost on your points 2 and 3..point 2 I think
I managed...File/new/Personal Folders File.pst ..is this
correct??
Point three I am completely lost with.....

I must also tell you that I found a copy of the original
pst on my networked computer. ...What I was doing was
reformatting my main PC and copied everything to a stand
by PC before reformatting..when I went to copy the files
back again after reformatting I could not find them on the
standby PC(view hidden files not activated)so I recovered
the deleted files off the refomatted pc and this is where
I started picking up the problems you advised me on. When
I found the original file I was exstatic but alas..now
getting the same error messages on the original as
well...can copying files from one pc to the next cause
this?? I copied that file with another name and used
scanpst on it but although it said it had fixed the
problem I think I retrieved about 10 messages out if 105
mb worth..is there any other program that is better that
you know of..

Many thanks

Garwil

No, that's not what I said it 2). I said, "Create a new mail profile."
What you did was create a new Personal Folders file (PST). Mail profiles
are created with the Mail applet in Control Panel (Control Panel>Mail>Show
Profiles). However, based on what you said above, you apparently have
Outlook 2000 or earlier. If you're using OL 2000 or 98, is it in Internet
Mode Only or Corporate/Workgroup mode? Help>About will tell you.
Point three I am completely lost with.....

Point 3) means click Tools>Services, locate the "Personal Folders" service,
select it and remove it.
I must also tell you that I found a copy of the original
pst on my networked computer. ...

That's good. Copy that file to some folder on your current PC, perhaps "My
Documents". If you're running Windows 2000 or XP, the default location for
PSTs is %USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook and
you could put it there, too, but DON'T overwrite any PST that has the same
name. Give the copy a diferent name from any PST that may exist in the
folder already. Then, when you add in the Personal Folders service, when it
asks for the location and name of the Personal Folders file, point it at the
the one you just copied.

That changes things.

Asking for help is wise when you can't solve a problem. I'm afraid I just
don't know enough about OL 2000 in IMO to be of any assistance. Sorry.

The "properties" message usually means you have either a corrupted .pst file
or one to which you don't have wite access or one that's totally missing.
I'd suggest you run Scanpst.exe against the recovered file 3-4 times,
alternating each time with Scandisk.exe or another disk repair tool.

It might help if you posted the exact text of the "layout" message.
