Outlook says 'sending message 1 of 34' but no emails in Outbox

Outlook says 'sending message 1 of 34' but there are no emails waiting to be
sent. This slows down Outlook and my PC as a whole as it tries to send
non-existent emails. How can I stop this happening?

Sounds like read receipts that can't be delivered. See
