Why would it take up to about 1 minute to check status of messages, and it
only happens on this computer.

Oh boy, we have "this" and "that" computers. Are they same exact
hardware? Is the OS and software configuration the same? Are they on
the same network (and within the same subnet)? Do they connect to the
same mail host? Are they connecting through the same network and have
the same route to get to the same mail host? Are you testing the
"this" and "that" computers at the same time? What is the size of
their .pst files? How many messages are currently in your mailbox(es)
as seen using the webmail interface to your e-mail account(s)?

They are on the same network, and connect to the same mail host. Most .pst files are 50kb and less. I would think it had something to do with my mcafee security but I disabled and still does't work properly. I downloaded outlook 07 and still same.

They are on the same network,

Is this your network or a corporate network?

If your network, do you use a router (which I presume since you
mention using 2 computers)? If so, have you used the QoS (Quality of
Service) to give one computer, per its MAC address, more priority than
others?
and connect to the same mail host.

POP3 account? If so, are you having Outlook leave messages up on the
server? IMAP4 account? Same account or different accounts?
Most .pst files are 50kb and less.

The e-mail client tracks what message-IDs it has previously downloaded
because it is the e-mail client that decides whether a mail item in
your mailbox on the server is new or old. If one PST file had been
significantly different than another, I was thinking that it would
take longer to check the recorded message-IDs in the larger PST file.
But you say they are about the same size plus they are pretty small.
I would think it had something to do with my mcafee security

Anything that interrogates your e-mail traffic will delay it. Besides
the anti-virus software, do you have any other anti-malware installed
(anti-spam, anti-spyware, anti-whatever)?
I downloaded outlook 07 and still same.

Do both computers have the same hardware? If not, do the NICs have
the same bandwidth capability? Are both connected to the same subnet
in your network (to ensure the workload on that subnet has the same
amount of traffic at the time that you test)?

Are the hard drives and I/O specs for both computers the same to
ensure that they can write the e-mail data to files on their disks at
the same rate? Have you killed or disabled all the background
processes to ensure that one host doesn't have more processes
consuming CPU cycles and data bus traffic than the other? Are the
CPUs the same? How alike or how different is the hardware and
software configuration between these 2 hosts?
