Outlook shows New messages in inbox as as read

Outlook 2002 SP3 is showing brand new unread messages in
the Inbox as being read, even though they have never been
read.
Any idea of what may be causing this?

Are you using any type of anti-spam program that may be marking the messages
that it processes as read? SpamKiller used to do that and had an option to
mark all messages as unread when downloaded into your email program. If that
option was not selected, all messages that it processed were marked as read.
