Outlook startup connection to verisign.com

Please explain why Outlook 2002 makes a connection to one
of the following when started?

sitefinder-idn.verisign.com
crl.verisign.com

We have a serious problem with any program on any of our
systems that makes a connection that is not directly user
initiated!

What mechanism by design or otherwise is responsible for
this?

Ask VeriSign as their problem with expired certificates this week played
havoc with a number of systems/programs.

After searching google.groups.com and finding no answer, Peter Vinoy asked:
