My Version of Outlook is 2002.
It looks to me as though I can use the calender notes and fax (?).

I just changed from Outlook Express to Outlook. For a single user on
a home pc I get the impression Outlook Express is better (simpler,
more streamlined).

It is simpler, but it also does less.
I use my mail program to read mail and news.

Then Outlook Express might be better for you.
How do I get Outlook to connect to the internet as soon as I open it?

You mean an immediate send/receive? In your mail account settings, but you
haven't told us your version of Outlook, so it's hard to say.
Also can I create the news icon on the mail folder bar?

You know that OL can't read news, right? That it just launches OE for that?
Thanks
John

Calendar, tasks, notes, for sure. I don't know about native faxing in
OL2002 - I use efax.
