Outlook will not download some emails

Dan Orth

Hi-

I am usig Outlook 2003 and see that the little emvelope icon comes up in the
system tray like Norton is scanning an email, but then Outlook doesn't
download it and it never shows up in my inbox. If I login to the web based
webmail I can see that there are 1 or 2 emails there. Outlook gets all the
other mail fine from the same account but it is always a few spam emails
that it misses. Does anyone have any suggestions? This is starting to
annoy me. Thanks-

-Dan

Have you checked your Junk Email folder?

Yes, it is not showing up there either or in the Norton Spam folder. I am
sure Outlook isn't even touching it since I have it set not to leave a copy
on the server and those are the only emails I can see when I use the web
based system as everything else is downloaded by Outlook. I really
appreciate your help though, thank you-

I would try disabling the Norton mail scan - more problems have been caused
by AV scanning email lately - this is the first thing I would do.

Hi Milly-

Thanks for your reply. I am disabling that now and will let you know if it
seems to work. I am a little concerned about this solution though with the
increase in email viruses. What do you mean by "lately"? Does this imply
it might get fixed in the near future? Do we know exactly what "this" is?
Thanks so much for your help-

I mean that more and more companies are adding email scanning to their AV
solutions, completely disregarding the fact that Outlook saves to the file
system by default (in patched clients) and the AV solutions always scan
attachments saved to the file system by default. The extra layer of
scanning incoming and outgoing mail adds overhead to the Outlook
send/receive process and often results in multiple copies of messages being
received and/or sent.

As long as you continue to run your on-access scanner, you will be no less
protected.
