Outlook won't receive messages

I'm trying to switch from Outlook Express to Outlook 2002(XP?). I have
imported all the settings from OE6 to Outlook, an also tried manually
entering them. I Have also disabled OE6 as a windows component, and made
sure that Outlook was set as the default email client. It still will not
get my emails from the server. The only way I can get them is to open OE6.
I want to use Outlook exclusively to take advantage of the calendar and
reminder features.
