Outlook won't retain font settings

I am trying to change the default font settings in Outlook 2003. I do
so under Tools\Options\Mail Format\Fonts. The fonts are successfully
changed and work until I close Outlook and re-open it. The settings
then revert back to the original default (Arial). This happens when I
have Word set as my email editor, which I want to continue to use. I
have also changed the default font in Word, modified the email.dot
file, and re-installed Office 2003 but the problem still persists.
Does anyone have any ideas?
