outlook wont start

Outlook hangs on the opening screen. I have loaded Office 2000 over it, to
no avail.
sometimes I get the message about a dll file.
what to do?

I have a very large pst folder (years of research) in another partition than
the programs. Can I uninstall outlook only and reinstall it?
