Outlook XP fails to archive old emails

I've tried this numerous times. I've been trying to create
archives of my old emails to clear them out of my everyday
..pst folder. I have successfully created the
inbox_2001.pst, inbox_2002.pst files and the sent_2001.pst,
sent_2002.pst and send_2003.pst

For the life of me, I can't get my inbox to archive stuff
from 2003. All of the folders have 'Archive items in this
folder using the default settings' option checked. When
doing the export, I say 'Archive this folder and its
subfolders' and say to 'Archive items older than: Thu 1/1/2004'

The archive process runs w/o error and generates
inbox_2003.pst. However, the file is only 256kb and has no
emails in it. All of the 2003 emails are still in the inbox
folders

Anyone have any ideas why the archive is not happening?

Check the Modified date on the items that aren't being archived as you think
they should. That's the date Outlook uses to determine whether or not an
item is ready to be AutoArchived, and a simple action such as moving the
item to another folder can change the Modified date. More information and a
list of actions that change the Modified date can be found here:

well isn't that great. so now that i can't do a regular archive, is there
anyway that I can still 'archive' those emails?

You can either create a new .PST file for the archive or you can open an
existing archive file via File | Open | Outlook Data File. It will open in
your Folder List, and you can drag and drop items to it from your main .PST
file. Use table views of your folders to see the most items at once, and
use the CTRL and/or SHIFT keys to select multiple items for dragging. Once
you're done with the archive, you can right-click the root folder of the
archive file and click Close -- it will close out of Outlook, but it's still
there on your hard drive for next time.
