Outlook XP Receiving Data from Exchange Server Dialog

OK, I've used Outlook for several years, and recently
upgraded to Outlook XP. Now I get this dialog box which
pops up every several seconds which states "Receiving Data
from Microsoft Exchange Server X ..." and ties up Outlook
until it's done. This used to be a background and
invisible process; now it's a dialog process on the
Taskbar! Any way to get this to work like previous
versions of Outlook?

OK - I agree the process wasn't "background"; it
just "looked" like a background process ...

Any idea where I might find this "checkbox" to eliminate
the "Retrieving Data..." popup dialog box? I can't find
one ...
