Can any one tell me if it is possible to use outlook as a
messenger without being on a domain?

I have a peer to peer network with no connection to the
network.

Thanks

Tony

Outlook is a mail client and requires connection to your ISP to function
across any network. It is not a messenger service. Use Yahoo! or AIM or
ICQ, but they will all require ISP access as well.

Perhaps if you detail what you are trying to accomplish, it would be easier
to suggest the appropriate means to accomplish it.

the (insert latest virus name here) virus, all mail sent to my personal

My description of the problem was not very clear, sorry
about that.

I have a peer to peer network of 10 computers all running
xp, with NO connection to the internet. As I teach IT I
want my students to be able to send and receive email
messages from each other. Or rather I want to set up a
simulation so that I can teach them how to do this.

I have found a simple, free piece of 3rd party pop 3
server software called AGSMAIL. I have installed this
succesfully on one of the computers and created a couple
of users. When I set up an email account in Outlook on
one of the other computers I cannot put in a proper email
address because I do not have a domain. i.e
[email protected]. If, however I pit the user email
address as being test1 ( one of the test usernames) then
when I test the settings they all work fine, but when I
go to outlook to send a message, using the email address
test1, it fails because it does not recognise the email
as a proper address.

I was wondering if there was a setting in OUTLOOK which I
could change so it will accept it.

Hope thats made things a little clearer.

What version of Outlook are you using? If 2002 or earlier, you may want to
use this:

I would think that if you use IP addresses, you should be able to access the
POP server. However, you'll also need an SMTP server. There are freeware
ones available for that, too.
