Outlook2003 won't finish opening "Unable to open default e-mail fo

I am trying to open Outlook after setting up the account in Control
Panel/Mail. It opens briefly saying it is creating a welcome message. Then I
get the following message "Unable to open your default e-mail folders. You
must connect to your Microsoft Exchange Server computer with the current
profile before you can synchronize your folders with the offline folder
file." I did't ask to do any synchronization in the setup. I tried to
delete the mail account so I could re-add it and it said I had to create
another one to put the files in before it could be deleted. Yet when I go to
create another account it says I can't because an account already exists.
How can I get around this catch22? If I re-install Office will it overwrite
what ever is thinking I want to synchronize something?
