Outlooks send/recieve errors; stays in memory

Outlook will do its send and recieve thing, but several time a day (at
least) it will start failing at 80%90% complete. The problem is that one
more more of the email accouts cannot connect for some reason, the
specific acct could be any of the several I use. The fix is to close
outlook; then open up the task window and kill the Outlook.exe process
that is stuck in memory. Usually Outlook will work properly for a while
after this.

I've had this problem for years with Outlook 2002, and may be 2000
before it. On Windows 2000 and Windows XP. On different computers. It's
a real PITA, making the simple task of getting email into a problem.
I've suspected Symantic's antivirus program, but I've tried two
versions, and even more convincingly, found the problem occurred even
with AV unistalled.

I would sure apprecitate it if someone can shed some light on this
blighted program behavior. I've searched this ng on google and amazingly
couldn't find any refs to a problem like this.
