Overlapping expanded timelines

I'm trying to create a few timelines within the parent timeline that are
overlapped.

Say I have a timeline from Jan to Dec and want to do two expanded timelines,
one from Jan to June, and another from Apr to Aug. Its not allowing me to
have expanded timelines that are overlapped. I am able to create non
overlapping timelines on the parent timeline, and I'm also able to create a
nested expanded timeline within the child timeline.

Is there a way of setting up overlapping expanded timelines at the same level?

Thanks

I've just tried doing so, not a problem.
I can also create a nested expanded timeline, are you perhaps doing
that accidentally? Add the first expanded timeline, move it away from
the parent, then add the second.

Hi Paul,

Thanks for the reply. I can sometimes get it to work, but it seems to be
very sensitive to the location of the expanded timeline. Is there a way to
lock the 'parent' timeline. Visio seems to reparent it automatically. I'm
trying to build a hierarchy of timelines that looks like the following, and
all the expanded timelines are parented to the top one....

-------------------------------------------------------------- parent
-------------
---------------
---------------
etc....

But when I put them in these locations, visio automagically reparents it to
the timeline on top, instead of the 'parent' one.

thanks

Yes, I think you just need to take care where the timelines are
placed, just put all the required timelines on first, when placing the
next one move all others out of the way.

I have a very similar question to this.

I have a Visio 365 Pro timeline drawing which I am importing data to from excel. I have got a primary timeline and 2 levels of children. The first level of child is a breakout of one section of the parent, for example 1 child goes from 11/1 to 11/16 and the other goes from 11/17 to 11/30 as these are the 2 different activities to take place during this month. Now there are some child activities I am trying to break out on a second child level that start in one and run into the other, for example the 2nd child would start on 11/10 and run until 11/20. But due to the fact that this crosses multiple timelines I cannot seem to get it to to it properly. Does anyone know if this is even possible within the application? If it is could someone please let me know how to do it?

Parent Timeline 11/1/2018 - 2/1/2019 (Broken into 4 segments)
Segment 1 (Parent Timeline) 11/1 - 11/30
Child Timeline 1 Task 1 11/1 - 11/16
Child Timeline Level 2 Primary Parent (3 Tasks) Task 1 11/1 - 11/10
Task 2 11/10 - 11/20
Task 3 11/1 - 11/16
Child Timeline 2 Task 1 11/17 - 11/30
Child Timeline Level 2 Primary Parent (3 Tasks) Task 1 11/17 - 11/20
Task 2 11/06 - 11/25
Task 3 11/10 - 11/20
Task 3 11/20 - 11/30
Task 3 11/17 - 11/30
thanks

Dan
