Overprint black

Risca

I have a Publisher 2003 file with Black (100%K) and a PMS colour in a spot
colour document. I am outputting as composite CMYK. I was expecting black to
overprint in the pdf I made from the postcript from Publisher. But it
doesn't. So I went to Commercial Printing Tools>Registration settings>per
object and selected overprint there. But publisher still hasn't honoured the
overprint. Does overprint not work with composite output? Any help please?

No, i don't think it does. Normally overprint is part of the trapping suite,
and the trapping modules are not brought into play until the print engine is
asked to make separations. This is a generalization for many applications,
not just MS Pub (quark, etc).

There are two approaches to making such a thing work: (1) use pub to make
the seps (if they are to be CMYK seps, I wouldn't. I think their default
rgb>cmyk profile sucks Big Time. I keep it in RGBand let my rip separate it.
(2) squirt it out as composite (RGB suggested) then PDF it and deal with the
OP issues in PitStop or TrapWise.

You can do it or you can send the file to me (for a modest price). Contact
