overwrite style default

I'm merging two documents, each has it's own "Heading 1" style, etc. Word (using 2000) will not let me rename it (uses Heading 1, App1) and wants to overwrite the original "Heading 1" style. Any thoughts on how to get around this?

You can't rename a built-in style, but you can make a new style in one of
the source documents, and then use Find and Replace to change all 'Heading
1' s to that style.
