P2002 Project Name Change

Can someone clarify how to change a mis-named project
without saving the project as a new file.

To rename a project saved in the Project Server database, do the following:

1. Open the project in question
2. Click File - Save As
3. Click the Save as File option
4. Save the file as an .mpp file on your hard drive or a network share
5. Ask your Project Server administrator to delete the project
6. Import the project into the database using Tools - Enterprise Options -
Import Project to Enterprise

Hope this helps.

I have a follow-up question regarding this. If the project
has "actual hours" posted to it from WEB Timesheets, will
this procedure have any adverse effect on any future
reporting of Actual Work? My concern is the links to any
posted WEB Timesheets will be deleted. It may only be no
past Timesheet adjustments can be made from that point on.
This may be acceptable if the Actual Work data is left
intact.

Thanks for the quick response, I appreciate the
information. Unfortunately, this approach creates extra
administration for project members...hiding deleted tasks
(functionality only allows one task at a time to be
hidden). Additionally, since our PWA timsheet is
interfaced with SAP time entry, project members will need
to verify their last time entry in SAP to prevent error
messages from taking over their Outlook Inbox.

Executing a file > save as function and then renaming the
project slightly will also allow you save it back to the
server without having to use the import function. Using
this process creates double entries until the incorrect
project has been deleted and does not eliminate the
project members hiding tasks.

I was hoping there was a process or script that we could
follow that would change the name in the SQL server; this
seemed to be the least intrusive and administrative.

Sam:

One strategy that I've successfully implemented for clients that have a need
to change the names of projects from time to time is to use a locked down
standard for the project name (numeric coding or whatever you can agree to)
and then add a custom field for the working name or common name of the
project.

Mark:

Actual work is preserved in the plan and you can push it back to the
timesheets using republish selecting to overwrite actuals in Project Web
Access.

Mark --

When you import the project back into the Project Server database, the
Actual Work values will be preserved in the project. On the other hand,
only uncompleted tasks will be published to each team member's timesheets.
Hope this helps.
