P2002 S-L-O-W Page Switch

Just "upgraded" from 2000 to 2002, to try to get better
behaviour of screen redraw (my wife thinks 2000 is
too "jumpy".)

The first document we tried it on has about 10 text frames
and three photos.

2002 takes about 45 seconds to switch from one page to
another. During this time Task Manager says that the
program is not responding. Switching on 2000 is close to
instantaneous.

To restore some productivity, I removed 2002 from the DTP
machine (W2K, 600 MHz, 256MB main RAM) and installed it on
my developmental machine (XP, 2.3 GHz, 512 MB main), and
reinstalled 2000 on DTP. Behavior of 2002 is the same on
the bigger machine. I made a copy of the file and deleted
all frames. Same thing. And this file, which now has no
visible content, has a size of 2.2 MB. (A blank file has a
size of 28K.)

Is this a video card issue? We have 64MB on both
machines, with updated drivers. All Office and Windows
updates have been installed.

I asked my supplier about returning the package; they
asked if I had contacted MS tech service. How do I do
that without paying for support on a product that doesn't
work?

Thanks for any help...

Have you checked the settings in View > Pictures...?

This sounds like you have a major problem with your video driver, or the
incorrect settings or both.

For a start I would suggest you go to the website of your video card
manufacturer and download the latest driver for your video card making sure
you get the correct version for the model of video card you have and the
correct version of Windows.

The issue you describe is not a Publisher issue.

Sorry about the multiple posts. I tried to do it through the
Microsoft Web site, with spotty results. I didn't see my original
post, or Ed's reply, until I switched to Google.

Setting Views->Pictures to Hide decreases the switching time to about
10 seconds.

As to video cards, both machines on which I've tried 2002 have 64MB on
the card. The faster machine is brand new, so I assume the driver is
current. I updated the driver on the other machine, with no effect. Do
I need more video RAM?

As to it not being a Publisher issue, 2000 behaved pretty well. 2002
is unacceptably slow.

Thanks for the help, though.

John there is something else causing this problem. There is basically no
difference in the screen system from Pub 2000 to Pub2002.

With your 64Mb video cards, things should fly.
What settings is the screen display set to? It should be 16bit colour, not
24bit or 32bit.
Have the swap file settings been played with?
Is the c:\Windows\Temp folder and any sub-folders and files all been
deleted?
Have the video acceleration settings being moved down?

You need to look elsewhere other than Publisher for this issue.
