Page Banner Problem (FP2003 DWT)

T

Tom Cook

I am upgrading my site from FP2000 to FP2003, and
replacing shared borders with dynamic web templates.
Most went well, but there are some pages where I am
having trouble getting my graphic page banners
to "take."

The naviagation is right (unchanged from the older shared
border version), and the banners look fine in display
mode. When I publish them (or bring up the local .htm in
the browser, for that matter) I don't get the graphical
banner, but rather a text banner.

I have tried reapplying the template, as well as various
other "retry" tricks, with no success.

Any hints as to how to get the webbot to realize the
graphical banner?

Is the Page Banner in an editable region? If not, try
putting it there.

Jim--

Thanks, I'll try this. But the whole idea of using the
DWT is to allow such common items as the Page Banner to
be common (at least in location and inclusion, although
not in content) across multiple pages attached to the
template...and for that it has to be in a non-editable
region.

I am perplexed that it seems to work great when I open
the page in FP 2003 (and it is in a non-editable header,
by the way, just a replacement for the older shared
border version). But when I save it to the disk, the
webbot comments are still there and the banner hasn't
been realized. That's not the case for the navigation
buttons (two sets)...they work fine in the uneditable
areas, and are "personalized" for each page. It's just
the banner that doesn't show up.

The FP Page Banner webbot does not have to be in a editable region of a DWT to work on a per page basis from the nav view / theme
- provide a URL of the site w/ the banner problem

Are you using the default theme for the banner image style or a custom banner (requires the FP 2002 SE)

I am using the page default theme for all the Page
Banners (as well as navigation bars...one horizontal in
top "margin", other vertical at left.

URL of one of the problem pages is
http://sschool.com/kids/sessions.htm

Try "next/back" to see others at same level. Right now
it's a mix of older pages and new ones, but the new (FP
2003 with DWT) all have the text banners realized, not
the graphical ones which I see in the FP2003 design
view. And some don't have the DWT applied yet, waiting
until I get this figured out. So right now it's pretty
much a mess.

FYI, I am using FTP to publish the web directly. But I
still don't understand why the nav bars work and the
banner doesn't.

Thanks for your help!

Stefan--

Thanks again for your help.

I am going to start a new thread after this response
(same title) since it is sliding further down my news
reader. Will double check tonight at home...but as I
recall:

1) Opening page in display view shows the graphic banner
2) Preview shows the graphic banner (I think)
3) When I save the file, as you saw, I get the graphic
banner webot tag but only the text realized.
[At the same time, the navigation bars realize without a
glitch.]

I tried your earlier suggestion of adding the banner to
an editable region, and there it worked fine...got the
bot with the graphic image in the saved file.

Some details which may or may not be helpful:
Running Wndows XP Home edition
My FrontPage 2003 installation is the result of a series
of upgrades from Frontpage->Frontpage 95->2000->2003
The pages were originally done using shared borders,
which I removed per the "code" procedures on the MS web,
then added the DWT.

I have tried modifying the DWT (deleting, writing, then
putting back the banner line, etc.) and attaching and
detaching the pages to the DWT with no changes.

In working with about ten pages at this level in the web,
a couple of them worked fine. I can see no difference in
the ones that work and the ones that don't.

At this point I have fixed up all the pages at this level
by hand (changing the text to the right graphics <img>
tag) and will publish those. But when I open the "fixed"
pages in FrontPage and write them again, I still get the
text rendering for the "bad" pages.
