Page boundaries (crop marks)

As far as I know, I disabled support for Asian languages but I still
have the page boundary marks showing. In the TOOLS > OPTIONS dialog
box, I also have a tab for Asian typography.

Is there anywhere else I should be looking to turn off support for
Asian languages?

There must be, since you're not the first person to report this issue.
Unfortunately, I don't have any further information, nor have I seen a
solution to this problem.

I'll escalate the issue, but it would help to have more details on your
version of Word, OS, printer model (and exact driver information), etc.

I'm using:
Microsoft Office Word 2003
Windows XP, Version 2002 (5.1.2600), Service Pack 1 Build 2600

I have multiple printers installed, my default printer is:
HP LaaserJet 8100 Series PS
HP8100_7.PPD (7.22.2001)

What would the printer have to do with it?

Additional information:
It appears this problem occurred after Adobe Creative Suite was
installed. Also, it happened to my coworker but she was able to disable
the Asian fonts and make the page marks disappear.

One other thing that may have affected it is that when I first tried to
remove the Asian Language settings and it asked me if I wanted to shut
down and restart open Office applications, I chose "no."

And lastly, I noticed on others computers, there is also a Windows XP
Language Settings that resides in Microsoft Office Tools in the Start
Menu. I do not have that shortcut and do not know where to find it. I
don't know if that has anything to do with anything.

Thank you for your help.

The language setting you want to change is the one in Microsoft Office
Tools, but this has moved in Office 2003: it's now in Start | Programs |
Microsoft Office | Microsoft Office Tools | Microsoft Office 2003 Language
Settings.

That is the one I changed. I was just curious if the XP one had
anything to do with the problem since I can't find it.

I've spent hours trying to resolve this issue. My tech support guy is
stumped as well. We've tried removing the Asian Language as you've
recommended. Nothing seems to get rid of the Asian Typography tab in OPTIONS
or the crop marks in Word. I've searched the Microsoft KB and your's is the
only reference I can find discussing this problem. Calling Microsoft Support
has gotten me nowhere except they want to charge me for support. I have no
confidence that they have a solution since there's nmothing in their KB about
this other than #839371. And that doesn't resolve the problem.

How do I get this reported to Microsoft without having to pay for the
priviledge of reporting a bug to them. Is there a solution out there other
than the one I've tried already?

BTW: I have the same configuration: MS Office 2003, Microsoft XP, I have
Adobe Acrobat installed as well but this never presented a problem before.

Hi Bill,

If you're used the MS Office Language Settings Tool
in Start=>Programs=>Microsoft Office Tools
and turned off all languages except English
do you get the crop marks when you start Word
in Office safe mode? (hold down ctrl key when
starting Word).

The Acrobat add-in can keep the templates from
being updated but the registry updating from changing
languages should work if the user has the correct permissions
for the changes to 'stick'.

Bob,

YES, SAFE Mode works!! The crops marks are gone and the Asian Typography
menu is no loger present. Thank you so much. I will pass along your advice
to my technical support.

Well, you can't keep operating in Safe Mode. This is merely a diagnostic
tool. What it shows you is that there is something in Normal.dot, the
Registry, or an add-in that is causing the problem. You will now need to
troubleshoot to find out which one.

Bill

Hmm, well I exited Word, restarted Windows XP and all is well now (no Safe
Mode). Something got reset by going into Safe Mode. I openned the
Normal.dot and don't see anything unusual there; pretty standard formatting
and no Asian Language settings. Adobe Acrobat add-in seems to work ok. The
registry may have been altered but I don't really know what to check there.
I can't explain it but I'm glad it is working now. If it reoccurs, I'll
check the Normal.dot before trying the Safe Mode. Perhaps the change to the
Language Setting didn't take effect until I started in Safe Mode. Thanks for
your help.

Sometimes starting in Safe Mode does seem to kickstart the Registry, so as
long as all is well, I'd let sleeping dogs lie.

Just to follow-up, Bill had emailed me before posting here, to see if I
had found a fix (which I hadn't). In the meantime your Safe Mode
suggestion fixed his problem, I tried it, and mine was resolved as
well.

Thank you all!
